Scene opens with Mom sitting on the couch reading a magazine.  Her purse is on the coffee table.

Enter Amy.  She walks over to the table and puts her backpack down.

Amy - (grins) Hi Mom...I'm home.

Mom - (looks up from magazine and smiles at Amy)  I can see that.  How was school, Honey?

Amy - (Sits down next to her mother on the couch)   Fine.

Mom - (closes magazine and looks at Amy)  Just fine?   Didn't anything exciting happen today...like maybe you learned how to become an astrophysicist?

Amy - (laughs)  Fat chance.  You know I'm no good at science.

Mom - Well, we each have our own talents.

Amy - That's true.  Too bad science isn't one of mine.   I'm probably going to get a C in physics.

Mom - (picks up magazine and smiles) Well, a C is much better than a D.

Mom - (leafs through the magazine)  Didn't you learn anything interesting in school today?

Amy - (slouches and puts her feet on the coffee table) Yes, I learned that I can't wait to graduate!

Mom - (looks at Amy) Well, you only have a month  left and then High School will become a distant memory.

Amy - A month seems like a reallly long time.  High School is sooooo boring.  (fold her arms over her chest)

Mom - Well, just think of it this way, you're almost 18 and you have your whole life to find ways to make life a little less boring.

Amy - (smiles and looks at her mother)  I already found a way to spice up my life.

Mom - Oh really?  Don't tell me you've suddenly decided to take up hog calling.

Amy - (laughs) Hog calling?  What's that?

Mom - Never mind, Dear.

Amy - I think I will pass on that whatever it is.

Amy - (stands up)  I do have some good news though.

Mom - (looks at Amy)  I like good news!  What is it?

Amy - (walks stage right, turns suddenly, bows dramatically and then blows kisses to the audience)

Mom - What are you doing?

Amy - I'm practicing.

Mom - Practicing for what?

Amy - I'm practicing for the Oscars?

Mom - (confused)  Oscar who?

Amy - (laughs and walks over to her mother) Not who...what.   The Oscars.  You know, the Academy Awards.

Mom - (looks at Amy like she's nuts) Ok....and why would you be doing that?

Amy - (grins) Because I found out yesterday that I got a scholarship to Acme Drama Academy.  I start in the fall.

Mom - (Jumps up and laughs.  She grabs each of Amy's upper arms with her ands and leans over to kiss her on the cheek)  That's wonderful!!!!

Amy - (winces, steps back and rubs her left arm)

Mom - What's wrong, Amy?

Amy - (turns and walks away)  Nothing.   Gotta go, Mom.  I have lots of homework.  (starts to pick up her backpack)

Mom - Amy, stop right there!  Why are you rubbing your arm?

Amy - (puts down backpack, takes a few steps stage right, stands still and looks at the floor.  Her back is to her mother)

Mom - (walks over to Amy, takes her by the shoulders and turns her around so that Amy is facing her mother)  Let me see  your arm.

Amy - (Amy tries to pull away)

Mom - (steps  back, turns around, takes a few steps toward center stage, turns) Roll up your sleeve, Amy.

Amy - But, Mom.

Mom - Amy, come over here and roll up your sleeve...now.

Amy - (Sighs and walks over to her mother.  She stands with her arms by her side.  Mom rolls up Amy's sleeve and gasps.)

Mom - I can't believe it.  (stunned)  You got a tattoo?  Why would you do that?

Amy - It's no big deal, Mom.

Mom- (looks at Amy with a hurt look on her face)  No big deal?  We talked about this.  I told you that you were not allowed to get a tattoo and you did it anyway?

Amy - Mom, I'm almost 18!

Mom - Yes, almost.  But you're not 18 yet and you disobeyed me.  Why would you do that?

Amy - (sits down on the couch facing away from her mother)   Because I felt like it.  When I found out I got the scholarship, I wanted to celebrate...that's all.

Mom - So, you celebrated by disobeying me.  I can't tell you how hurt I am.

Amy - You're over reacting, Mom.  (she pulls up her sleeve and looks at the tattoo)  It's no big deal...it's just a couple of butterflies.  I think it's kind of pretty.

Mom - (thinks for a minute, picks up magazine and turns a few pages.  She looks up at Amy)  Where did you get the money for the tattoo?

Amy - (looks guilty and gets up and walks a few paces then stares at the audience)

Mom - I asked you a question, Amy.

Mom - Look at me, Amy.

Amy turns to face her mother.

Mom - (holds up magazine and points to it with her finger)   I just read an article in this magazine on tattoos and they are very expensive.   You couldn't possibly afford one that big. Where did you get the money?

Amy - (sighs) I stole it, Mom.  I took it from your purse last night while you were sleeping.

Mom - (picks up her purse, takes our her wallet and counts her money)  Amy, how could you?  You took almost $200 from my wallet.

Amy - Don't worry Mom.  If you're that upset about it, I will pay you back.

Mom - (puts wallet back in purse, puts purse back on coffee table)  Really?  And how will you pay that much money back by the end of the month?  You stole the rent money, Amy.

Amy - What?

Mom - (rubs her forehead) I don't have the money to pay the rent now.

Amy - I'm sorry, Mom.  I didn't know.  I was just so happy that I got the scholarship that I wanted to do something fun.  All actresses have tattoos you know.

Mom - Then I guess you better try to figure out how actresses who have tattoos also pay the rent because we are going to be living in the car if we don't find a way to come up with that money.  (Mom turns her face away from Amy)

Amy - (reaches over and puts her hand on her mother's face.   Mom turns to look at Amy)  I really am sorry Mom.  I'll find a way to come up with the money.  I can baby-sit every weekend.  I can sell the ring Grandma gave me.  I can even get a paper route.

Mom -  (stares blankly at Amy as tears run down her face)

Amy - Please don't cry...I'm sorry I disobeyed you.

Mom - (Mom wipes the tears from her face and hugs Amy) We'll find a way to come up with the rent money.

Amy - Does this mean you forgive me?

Mom - Yes, Amy.  I forgive you.

Amy - (grins) Good..then I guess you won't be too upset when you find out I got my belly button pierced too.

(fade to black)
