LIVING WATER

Synopsis:  Jesus and His disciples decide to return home to Galilee...by way of Samaria.  The disciples are appalled since the Samaritans and the Jews have been enemies for a long time.  Jesus insists, and as they travel through Samaria, Jesus decides to stop for a drink of water while the disciples are out shopping.

CHARACTERS
JESUS, DISCIPLES, WOMAN AT THE WELL.

JOHN 4: 3 - 15 AND
JOHN 4: 27 - 38

PROPS: BUCKET.

SCRIPT

Jesus - (looks at disciples)  Well guys, it's time to go home!

Disciple #1 - That's great, Lord!  We've been gone a long time.

Disciple #2 - It will be good to see my family again.

Disciple #3 - What are we waiting for...let's go!

Other Disciples - Yeah, let's go!

(Disciples all turn left and walk away and Jesus turns right and walks away.)

Jesus - (Clears his throat)  Yoo-hoo.

(Disciples turn in unison and look at Jesus)

Jesus - Hey...you're going the wrong way.

Disciple #4 - No Lord...this is the way home.

Jesus - It's the loooooong way home.  We're going this way. (points to the right)

Disciple #5 - But Jesus, if we go that way we have to go through Samaria!

All disciples in unison - Boo!

Jesus - (smile) True.  But, we're still going this way.

Disciples turn and follow Jesus as they walk off stage.   They are all grumbling.

Disciple #1 - I hope my mother doesn't find out that I have been in Samaria.  She will punish me for sure!

fade to black.

Scene opens with a well center stage.  Jesus walks over to the well and sits down.

Disciple #2 - Why are we stopping, Jesus?

Disciple #6 - We have to hurry...we don't have time to stop.

Disciple #5 - We don't want to spend any more time in Samaria than is absolutely necessary.

Disciple #2 - I just hope no one sees me hanging around here.   I would be so embarrassed!

Jesus - (smiles) I am tired and I want to rest.  I will sit here for a while.  The rest of you can go into town and do some shopping...see the sights.

Disciple #3 - Oh, Lord.  Please say you're joking.

Jesus - No, I'm serious.  Be off with you now.

Disciples turn in unison and walk away...grumbling as they go.

Jesus leans back against the well, crosses his arms and leans his head back.

Enter the Samaritan woman.  She is carrying a bucket.

Jesus - (stands up and smiles) Hello.

Woman - (timidly) Hello.

Jesus - Looks like you are going to be filling that bucket with water.

Woman - Yes, sir.  I am.

Jesus - I am really  thirsty.  Would you mind giving me a drink of water. 

Woman - You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan. We are enemies. I'm surprised you are even willing to speak to me...much less ask for water.

Jesus - Well, if you knew who I really am, you would be asking ME for water, instead.

Woman - Huh?

Jesus - I can give you living water.

Woman - But you don't even have a bucket.  Where would you get this water?

Jesus - (Jesus looks at the well)  People who drink from this well get thirsty again.  (looks at woman) I can give you water that will take away your thirst altogether.  My water will last forever and give eternal life...and I don't need a bucket either!

Woman - (holds out her bucket) Please sir, give me some of that water!

Enter disciples...back from shopping.  They stand off to the side and watch Jesus while he talks to the woman.

Disciple #1 - Oh no.  Jesus is talking to a Samaritan woman.

Disciple #2 - We have to get out of here before there is trouble.

Disciple #3 - (looks at Disciple #1) You go tell him we have to leave this place...fast!

Disciple #2 - Not me!  I'm not telling him.  You tell him.

Disciple #3 - I'm not telling him!  You tell him.

Disciple #4 - Quit it you guys.  Let's get a little closer and see if we can hear what they are saying.

Disciples all tiptoe over to Jesus and the woman.   Disciples turn to each other and put their fingers to lips and say "Shhhhh" to each other.  Disciples all lean forward and put their hands to their ears to listen to what Jesus and the woman are saying.

Disciple #1 - Can you hear what they are saying?

Disciple #5 - No, can you?

Disciple #3 - No they are speaking too quietly.  I guess will just have to wait here until they finish their conversation.

Disciples sit down in unison off to the side and wait. (They sigh in unison)

Jesus - (speaking to the Woman) You Samaritans know so little about the God you worship.

Woman - (offended and puts hands on hips)  Well, I know this much.  A Messiah is coming.  He will be sent by God and when he comes, he will explain everything to us.

Jesus - You're right.  Not only is the Messiah coming, he is already here.

Woman - (drops the bucket) Really?  Are you sure?

Jesus - (Jesus smiles at her.) I'm sure.

Woman - Oh, I have to pack.  I need to find my suitcase.   I don't care where the Messiah is, I am going to find him.  (dances around in excitement)

Jesus - (smiles)

Woman - (looks at Jesus) Thank you for talking with me, but I really have to go now.

Jesus - But wait...

Woman - If you can just tell me where to find the Messiah, I will be on my way!

Jesus - You don't have to go anywhere to find the Messiah.

Woman - Yes, I really do.  Please just tell me where he is.

Jesus - He's right in front of you.

Woman - What do you mean?

Jesus - I am the Messiah.

Woman - Really?

Jesus - Really!

Woman - Oh this is wonderful!  It's a miracle!

Jesus and the woman laugh for joy.

Woman - Do you mind if I go into town and tell my friends that you are here?

Jesus - I don't mind at all.

Woman - Ok, I'll be right back.  You won't go away will you?

Jesus - No, I will wait for you here.  (smiles)

Woman - This is the best day of my life!  (turns and runs off stage)

Disciples - (turn in unison and watch her go)

Disciple #6 - Where do you suppose she's going in such a hurry.

Disciple #1 - I don't know.

Disciple #3 - Oh, oh.

Disciple #4 - Look!

Disciples all turn in unison and put their hands over their eyes to shade them from the sun and look into the distance.

Disciple #5 - Oh, no.  She's coming back this way and she has a lot of people with her.

Disciple #2 - Come on!  Let's go tell Jesus.

Disciples all run over to Jesus.

Disciple #2 - Jesus, we must run. 

Disciple #4 - We must hurry.  The Samaritans are coming.

Disciple #5 - They hate Jews....we are in big trouble.

Jesus - (looks at disciples).  No we're not.

Disciple #6 - But Jesus, they will try to kill us!

Jesus - No they won't.  These people are coming to see ME.

Disciple #4 - Are you sure?

Jesus - I'm sure.  Everything will be fine.

Jesus - Have a seat guys.

Disciples sit down in unison around Jesus.

Disciple #6 - Ok, Lord.  But, I sure hope you know what you're doing!

Jesus - Trust me.  I know exactly what I'm doing! (smiles)

(fade to black)
